Last August, Ashley Frangipane — aka Halsey — released her debut album, “Badlands,” an electro-pop concept album based on the idea of a dystopian, futuristic society.
The Jersey girl’s huge social-media fanbase (more than 3 million Twitter followers) and the success of her anthemic single “New Americana” have resulted in a headline date at Madison Square Garden. Saturday’s show will cap a meteoric rise for the 21-year-old. Here are the deets on this rising star.
1.She miscarried while on tour
Halsey revealed in July that before the “Badlands” album came out, she suffered a miscarriage just before she was due onstage for a Chicago concert. Rather than cancel the show, she told Rolling Stone, she took two Percocet and wore adult diapers throughout her performance.
2.She isn’t dating Justin Bieber
Halsey’s sexually charged performance of the song “The Feeling” with Justin Bieber on the “Today” show late last year was enough to set tongues wagging. Even Mama Halsey got in on the gossip. “My mom texted me, ‘Are you dating Justin Bieber?’” she told Rolling Stone early this year. “I was like, ‘Mom ... don’t you think I would tell you?’”
3.She used to live the Brooklyn hipster nightmare
“Halsey” is an anagram of “Ashley,” but she also chose the moniker because it stems from Halsey Street in Bushwick, Brooklyn. It was there that she spent time living in an artist’s loft, as well as becoming involved with a boyfriend who, at the time, was also a heroin addict. Her song “Hurricane” is inspired by that experience.
4.She’s not afraid of speaking about mental health
Halsey suffers from bipolar disorder, and at the tender age of 17 she ended up in a psychiatric hospital following a suicide attempt. “I was in there with 9-year-olds who had tried to kill themselves,” she told Billboard of the ordeal.
5.She’s honest about her sexuality
Halsey identifies herself as bisexual and isn’t afraid to embrace the label. There are two versions of her video for “Ghost” — in one, she is paired with a man, and in the other, she is with a female love interest.
