Shirley Murdock, born on the 22nd of May 1957, is an American singer and songwriter who became famous for her songs “As We Lay” and “Jesus is Love” with Lionel Richie.

Born in Toledo, Ohio, Murdock began singing at an early age. She sang with her church’s gospel choir until artist Roger Troutman discovered her talent, and she joined Troutman’s group, Zapp, as one of their backup singers which signaled the beginning of her career.
After years working as Zapp’s backup singer, Murdock eventually had a formal duet with the band in 1985 in the song called “Girl, Cut it Out”., which achieved minor success and eventually entered the R&B charts during that year.
Finally in 1986, she was signed to Elektra Records and was able to launch her solo career. She immediately released “No More” which became a hit and made it to the R&B charts in 1986. Her real career-defining moment came when she released her single “As We Lay” – the song was part of her self-titled debut album that became certified gold. The beginning of her solo career helped her wealth tremendously.
Murdock released four more albums entitled “A Woman’s Point of View”, “Let there be Love!”, “Home”, and “Soulfood” over the next few years.
Aside from singing, Murdock also ventured into the world of stage production, and joined actor Cuba Gooding Jr. in the inspirational play “Be Careful What You Pray For” in 2000. She also showed her acting prowess in the movie “Sweating in the Spirit” released in 2005 and in the stage play “A Mother’s Prayer” in 2009. Murdock also has plenty of collaborations with other artists. Her song with Zapp and Roger called “Computer Love” became a big hit in the late ‘80s. She also worked with Lionel Richie on “Jesus is Love”, which became one of the most played songs on the Sirius XM gospel channel, and worked with renowned pastor T.D. Jakes on her first gospel album “Home”, and with Teena Marie on the song “Soldier” in 2009. Her various collaborations also helped increase her wealth.
