The Cubs haven’t reached the 85 percent vaccination threshold, and team president Jed Hoyer is not hiding his dissatisfaction.
When a team reaches the 85 percent mark, COVID-19 regulations, like mask wearing, indoor and outdoor dining and social distancing, loosen. But that hasn’t happened yet for the Cubs.
“It’s disappointing to not be at 85 percent as a team,” Hoyer told reporters on Thursday. “We’ve worked hard to try and convince or educate the people that have been reluctant. We’re at a place right now — I’m not going to give up hope we’re going to get there — my level of optimism is waning. It is disappointing.”
Roughly half of the teams in the sport have reached the 85 percent threshold. Hoyer believes it is an advantage for teams to get to that point, since it means fewer positive tests and close contracts wouldn’t have to sit out as they await follow-up testing.
“There are conveniences that come with getting to 85 percent as a group,” he said. “There’s a competitive advantage we’re going to miss. Being transparent about it, we’re not a player away from being at 85 percent. It’s a disappointing thing that we’ll have anxieties and restrictions that others don’t.”
